I Will A Christmas Novella edition by Lisa Kleypas Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I'm going to go against my friends here again and say I enjoyed this little novella. I hadn't read it before and I enjoyed the other stories in this series. I know it's a tried and true theme about the rake and the spinster but this one works. I'm not going into details because there are already loads of summaries. You'll either like it or not. I deducted a star for the melodrama with the h "backsliding" towards the end. I guess without it, the story could've been a little too perfect.
I am so conflicted by my feelings for I Will. I think Lisa Kleypas is the queen of historical romance and I was so excited for this Christmas novella and I was loving it for the first, oh 70% or so. Spoilers ahead. You've been warned.
I enjoyed Andrew and Caroline so very much... right up until the borderline non-consensual (almost) sex scene. It didn’t fit, it was unnecessary and it pulled me out of the story. I know this book is a reissue of a story released in a different time, one where readers might not react the same way I did now, but it's still tough to look past. No means no, no matter who is doing the pushing and why someone is resistant. This isn't the first time I've come across a similar storyline in an older HR novel, but it always surprises me and turns me off to the book. This time the heroine stopped short of actually assaulting the hero, which made it *somewhat* better, but it left me feeling pretty icky.
The events after that scene, and through the end of the novella, made me feel better about the whole thing. I just can't entirely shake the way that scene made me feel. It really is a very good story overall, though.
Quick, steamy, romantic read reminiscent of her classic desert isle keeper Dreaming of You. I know it's almost sacrilegious to compare a mere novella to arguably one of the greatest romances of all time but in this case it is warranted from the bespectacled dark haired bluestocking heroine to the rakish dissolute hero who believes himself utterly beyond saving.
Caroline is very decidedly on the shelf and she's okay with that until a rake comes to call with a very dangerous proposal pose as his intended for a few weeks in order to convince his dying father he has turned a new leaf and thus he's worthy of inheriting the family fortune. Caroline is not at all fond of Andrew, Lord Drake. In fact, it could be said she actively despises him for leading her impressionable brother astray but she cannot afford to turn him down. Close proximity soon destroys all the preconceived notions they both had about the other. The Ice Maiden is not so icy and the rake is a facade adopted by a man in desperate need of love and acceptance.
I enjoyed this book tremendously but I have always hated the abbreviated nature of novellas. There's simply not enough space for adequate development of the characters or their relationship. This would have been incredible as a full length book. Alas, it's still a quick satisfying read and there's an excerpt of the eagerly awaited Devil in Spring at the end featuring another classic Kleypas couple Evie and Sebastian. I'm counting down the days until I can get my grabby hands on it but until then spend a bit of time with Caroline and Andrew this Christmas. Highly recommended.
"I WILL" by Lisa Kleypas - When a Georgian bluestocking is propositioned by a rakish noble, she finds the unlikely deal he proposes is the gift of a lifetime... This novella was originally published in the "Wish List" anthology in 2001, and then again in "A Historical Christmas Present" in 2008. This is the first time its been released for kindle however, and is well worth the $1.99 price tag in my humble opinion. It's also part of the "Capitol Theatre" series and will be much more enjoyable if you've read "Somewhere I'll Find You" (which was okay) but most especially "Because You're Mine" (which was fabulous) first.
I adored this little story when I read it at least a decade ago, and I still do today. It's such a touching, memorable, and utterly beautiful romance. A definite must-read for those who loved the the "Capitol Theatre" series featuring Logan Scott. The entire story engaged my emotions and moved me throughout. Caroline and Andrew were total opposites, but completely perfect together. They get to know each other over several months time, so the developing love between them was entirely believable. Ultimately their union is a matter of acceptance and redemption, and without a doubt Caroline proves to be Andrew's saving grace. It's truly a captivating read and one of the absolute best and romantic short stories I've ever read, and likely ever will =)
